Saver

Product Design, 2018

Overview

Saver is an app that encourages people to save for a vacation as a group

My process began with the daily observation of my friends' habit of saving for a vacation as a group. I conducted 6 interviews and qualitative research with the purpose of gaining better understanding of people’s saving habits and their needs. When looking through interview data, I recognized that most people planned a vacation with their friends and experienced uncomfortable moments regarding planning and saving as a group.

Interviews

Here's what my friends have to say about their experience saving for a vacation.

Vacation is what we always want the most
but we do not consider it as our priority in our daily life.

From the interviews, I learned that the ideal users would be the "Group travelers". This type of user typically has a hard time setting and hitting their goal as a group. They generally want to know the bare minimum to save. I picked this user because I wanted to challenge myself with creating a simple application for multiple users who need help of planning and saving.

Why is the app "saver" needed?

Problems

  • A Budget Plan
It takes lots of time and energy to create a budget plan.

  • A Saving Plan
Considering everything you need for a vacation is complicated.

  • For a group
It is difficult to agree on a budget for everyone. No one wants to make it a priority.

Finding opportunities

By understanding the problems, I created a "how might we" statement that would drive the primary focus of the app.

How might we easily encourage people to save for a vacation and be self-motivated?

Wireframes

The app had to allow users to set their vacation fund goal, edit amounts to save, and help hit their goal.

I went through several iterations of concepts. I created a set of wireframes in three different ways.

Usability Testing

People wanted an easy to use app that manages their savings and does not need constant monitoring.

I went out to a cafe and conducted some usability testing with people. I specifically targeted millennials who were already interested in saving and planning. Next, I collected feedback on the functionality, interface, and the overall concept of the app. People wanted a clearer flow and more feedback on what to do after they set their goal.
